What the Reference Value Describes
The CDC blood lead reference value of 3.5 micrograms per decilitre is set at the ninety seventh and a half percentile of blood lead in children aged one to five, which means it identifies children carrying more lead than most children carry.
CDC estimates that approximately half a million children in the United States have blood lead at or above that value, and notes that lead poisoning often occurs without obvious symptoms and frequently goes unrecognized.

Lead reaches children from several sources. Drinking water is the one that can be characterized precisely, since a tap is a defined point and lead is a defined parameter with a defined analytical method.
Lead remains present in a range of components installed today, including backflow preventers and pressure reducing valves, well pump and booster pump wetted components, brass pipe fittings including tees, elbows, couplings, unions and adapters, faucet cartridge housings and stems, hose bibbs and exterior spigots, water heater nipples and relief valves, faucet bodies in kitchens and bathrooms, angle stops and shutoff valves beneath sinks and behind appliances. The lead free designation notwithstanding, such fixtures return measurable lead on analysis with regularity.
How the Sampling Event Is Conducted
Our sampling technicians perform the site visit at the taps a child actually meets, including where feeds are prepared, where bottles are washed and where the child is bathed.
Lead is drawn as an ordered series, a stagnation period is requested from the client where the parameter requires it, and outlet screens are left undisturbed so particulate lead is captured.
